Most of them are subsidiaries of foreign-invested or export-oriented groups, where ESG procurement mandates now include workwear. Here is a practical breakdown of the two mainstream options.
Recycled polyester (rPET): the pragmatic choice
Made from recycled PET flakes re-granulated into fiber. GRS-certified rPET carries roughly 30% lower carbon footprint than virgin polyester, while abrasion resistance, wrinkle recovery, and color fastness remain on par — polyester's physical properties do not degrade with recycled feedstock.
Cost premium: 8-15% over virgin polyester at the fabric level, typically under 5% at the finished-garment level for bulk orders.
Verification: always request the GRS Transaction Certificate (TC). Verbal claims of "contains recycled material" without a TC should be treated as virgin polyester.
Organic cotton: small proportions, concentrated value
Grown without synthetic pesticides, certified under GOTS or OCS. Its advantage is skin-friendliness and zero chemical residue — ideal for garments worn against the skin for long shifts. Weaknesses mirror conventional cotton: wrinkles and shrinks, unsuitable alone for structured outerwear.
Cost premium of 30-50% over conventional cotton yarn means organic cotton usually appears in premium hospitality and healthcare scenarios. Confirm the finished garment also passes OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — the safety standard Hengtong is certified against.
Four application scenarios
- Tech company culture apparel. Annual polo shirts and hoodies with 30-50% rPET replacing virgin polyester: near-zero cost impact, documented ESG evidence.
- Premium hotels and restaurant chains. Organic cotton blends for front-of-house roles with long skin contact; conventional fabrics where structure matters — allocate budget by role.
- Export manufacturers' workshop wear. GRS-certified rPET workwear is direct, auditable evidence when European or American clients audit environmental credentials.
- Outdoor team apparel. Shell jackets are already polyester-based; switching to rPET is the lowest-friction change with the best internal storytelling.
Three tips for buyers
Start with blends ("30% rPET + 70% conventional") before going all-in. Require certificates to travel with each batch, written into the contract's technical annex.
